In a significant blow to its workforce, American aircraft manufacturer Boeing has laid off around 180 employees at its Engineering Technology Center in Bengaluru, Karnataka. This decision comes as part of Boeing's global strategy to reduce its workforce by 10%, a move announced last year.
Boeing has around 7,000 employees in India, which remains a key market for the company. The layoffs were executed in the December quarter of 2024, affecting skilled engineers and other professionals.
Lack of Official Statement
Despite the large-scale impact, Boeing has yet to issue an official statement. However, a source cited in a PTI report indicated that the layoffs were part of what the company describes as "strategic adjustments."
While Boeing claims that these adjustments will not impact customer service, government operations, or safety standards, the reality remains harsh for the displaced employees who now face job uncertainty.
Boeing's Presence in India
The Boeing India Engineering & Technology Center (BIETC), situated in Bengaluru and Chennai, handles critical aerospace work. Boeing’s Bengaluru campus represents one of its largest investments outside the United States. The company’s annual sourcing from India amounts to approximately $1.25 billion, with over 300 local suppliers in its network.
However, the recent layoffs raise concerns about job security and the company's long-term commitment to its Indian workforce. Employees and industry observers will be watching closely to see how Boeing navigates the impact of these reductions in the coming months.
